I have been a director of a small to medium sized accountancy business for the last five years. Last night I attended a meeting of the directors at our London office – the main topic of discussion was the best strategy to ensure that the business survives this current financial downturn. Officially the UK is not in a recession but all of the signs are that we are in one – the stock markets from around the globe are falling sharply and it seems likely that another one of the European countries may need a bail out – perhaps even a big one such as Italy or Spain. Confidence therefore is very low and many of our clients are feeling the pinch which has a knock on effect on our business. In the meeting it was decided that we needed to cut costs and in this article I will be writing about the services that we felt we could not do without.
There are certain services that we could do ourselves with a little bit of organisation and cooperation – take the office cleaning for example – or the gardening (the garden isn’t exactly the biggest in the world) – or the window cleaning. Yes it is, of course, good to be able to pay somebody else to do these tasks, it enables us to focus on the business itself. But when push comes to push any savings can add up over the long term. There were many other items of our monthly expenditure that we could also cut without too much, if any, damage being done. In fact when you look at each of the items that we pay for each month it is quite staggering – this is perhaps something that we should have done months ago.
The one service that we were most certainly not willing to cut was our IT support London. On numerous occassions our IT systems play up much to the amusement and bemusement of our staff, as we are unable to work out what has gone wrong. The company we use for our IT support are truly superb and are always quick off the mark to put things right – which is very much appreciated.
